Tim Hill Makes a Case for the Short Circuit Reboot
From ?American Reunion? to ?Fright Night,? remakes of 1980s and 1990s films have taken their lumps on the big screen lately. But the director behind the new iteration of ?Short Circuit? is taking a rigorous approach that he hopes will help his movie avoid the reboot trap.
Tim Hill,? the ?Hop? helmer who has been hired to direct the film, says that his take on Johnny No. 5 --?of course, the weapon-turned-cuddly-companion from the 1986 hit -- will resonate in this era of drone warfare.
?The thing that makes it so relevant is that we live in this age of robots, particularly when it comes to war,? Hill, also a longtime writer on the television series "SpongeBob SquarePants,? told 24 Frames. ?We have drones that do our fighting for us, do all these jobs men and women don?t want to do. And that?s what makes this so interesting -- things like this moment in the story when Johnny realizes he?s going to be disassembled and contemplates death, and whether it?s right to terminate someone else.?
He paused, ?These are heavy themes for a family movie," he said, anticipating a reasonable reader's reaction. "But I think they can have their place.?
John Badham?s comedy classic told of?Johnny, a Cold War weapon who attains a form of consciousness after being caught in a lightning storm. Starring Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens as the scientists who create Johnny, the film ironically takes a human turn when animal-lover Ally Sheedy befriends the rolling robot.
The new version will recast the Sheedy role as a teenager or preteen, Hill said, in part because it gives the movie a family-friendly angle but?also because it adds a wish-fulfillment dimension?not present in the original.
Hill said the robot protagonist will, however, retain the wide-eyed tone of his forebear -- ?like an infant struck by lightning, and you see human foibles reflected in him.? (The new version is being developed at Dimension Films, the Bob Weinstein-led unit that acquired the rights a number of years ago. Hill and various writers are?working on the script.)
To prepare for the movie, Hill, a polymath who is one of the more eclectic director voices out in Hollywood, has been reading up on modern robotics, ticking off in the interview a few academic texts he has been studying.
But he added that one doesn?t need an advanced degree from MIT to appreciate the issues he hopes to raise.
?If you look?at kids and how they adopt machinery, it?s just getting tight and tighter,? Hill said. ?We're just becoming more connected to our machines. That?s why I think this can say more about our relationship with technology than the original ever did.?
And how will the new Johnny look in an era when technology has?become ever more compact (and, it should be noted, Pixar?s ?Wall-E? has offered its own cinematic take on a humanoid robot)?
?I?m tempted to go back and grab the original,? Hill said. ?But I think it has to be closer to what modern design actually is. There are computer models and labs developing real machines like this. We want to do something like that.?
And despite the wide-eyed qualities to Johnny, a little menace wouldn?t hurt, either.
?You?ve got to find the balance between something fierce and something endearing,? Hill. said. ?The original was cute. But no one was threatened by it.?

Lil Wayne gets love all around the world, but on his next album, Weezy plans to flip the script. During an exclusive interview with Amanda Seales from MTV's new weekly late-night talk show "Hip Hop POV," Wayne revealed that he is working on a new LP called Devol (pronounced "devil"). "That's 'loved' spelled backwards, and it's my version of love songs," Tunechi explained.
"RapFix Live" premiered the exclusive clip, and fans can watch the entire interview tonight (April 11) at midnight ET on MTV during the series premiere of "Hip Hop POV."
Seales went down to Miami, where she was treated to an intimate listening session by the Young Money boss himself. It's no secret that Weezy F has a way with the ladies. With songs like "Lollipop" and "She Will," Wayne has carved out a lane for himself as a hip-hop sex symbol — but he isn't exactly going all loverboy on us. "What I mean by my version of love songs is meaning they're not saying, 'I love you,' " he explains in the clip. "It's all material I did when I was locked up."
Birdman Jr. isn't the only rap star who will pop up on tonight's debut: 2 Chainz will join the "Hip Hop POV" castmembers — also including Charlamagne Tha God, Devi Dev, Bu Thiam and Sowmya Krishnamurthy — on the show's premiere.
Don't miss tonight's premiere episode of "MTV's Hip Hop POV" at midnight ET on MTV. The conversation-based show highlights some of today's hottest news and more from a cast of hip-hop tastemakers. Fans can also join in on the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #HipHopPOV.

Gay rights group sues Nevada for same-sex marriage | Washington ...
LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A national gay rights advocacy group took its state-by-state fight for same-sex marriage equality to a federal court for the first time Tuesday, filing a lawsuit in a bid to force Nevada to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.
The Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund lawsuit focused on the differences between rights granted by a domestic partnership law passed by the state Legislature in 2009 and a gay marriage ban made part of the state constitution by voters in 2002.
It seeks to void the constitutional ban "and any other sources of state law that exclude same-sex couples from marriage," and to recover unspecified legal costs and fees. It claims eight same-sex couples are being discriminated against because they aren't allowed to marry.
"Nevada already gives same-sex couples the rights and responsibilities of family, parenting and relationships," said Tara Borelli, a Los Angeles-based Lambda Legal attorney. "What is the reason for not giving them the one word that says it all?"
The civil lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas names Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval as a defendant. It alleges state lawmakers established a "selective bar to access to marriage" with the 2009 domestic partnership law that was passed over a veto by then-Gov. Jim Gibbons, a Republican.
Jennifer Lopez, a spokeswoman for Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat, said the state will review the filings and decide how to proceed.
Lambda Legal, founded in 1973, calls itself the oldest and largest national legal advocate for civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and HIV-positive people. Borelli said the organization has been fighting other gay marriage issues in other states, including an Arizona challenge by state employees of a cut to domestic partner health benefits and a California fight against the federal defense of marriage act.
Borelli said the Nevada lawsuit is the first by the group to make a direct state marriage equality claim in federal court. The lawsuit says the 2002 constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
"Every day that same-sex couples in Nevada are denied marriage equality, the government sends a message that their families are not worthy of equal dignity and respect," Borelli said.
The lead plaintiffs in the case are Beverly Sevcik, 73, and Mary Baranovich, 76, of Carson City, who've been together for nearly 41 years and have raised three children, Lambda said. They have four grandchildren.
Baranovich said in the lawsuit that she can't understand how her lifelong commitment to Sevcik hurts others.
"After four decades of sharing a life together, all we want is to commemorate our love for each other in the same way as other couples, through marriage," Sevcik said in the lawsuit.
Other plaintiffs named in the case include four couples in Las Vegas, two couples in Reno and Caren Cafferata-Jenkins, 53, and Farrell Cafferata-Jenkins, 48, a Carson City couple who've been together for 15 years and are raising two sons. Caren Cafferata-Jenkins is executive director of the Nevada state Commission on Ethics.
Half the couples, including Sevcik and Baranovich, recently tried to obtain marriage licenses in Nevada and were refused because of their same-gender relationship, the lawsuit said. The other plaintiffs obtained marriage licenses in other states where same-sex marriage is allowed and want to have their marriage recognized by their home state.
American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada chief Dane Claussen in Las Vegas cheered the lawsuit and called it ironic that same-sex couples can't marry in tourist-oriented Las Vegas, which promotes itself as the marriage capital of the world.
"Nevada already has an all-but-marriage domestic partnership law," Claussen said in a statement. "That Nevada's constitution says the word 'marriage' can be used only for opposite-sex relationships strongly suggests that gay, lesbian and bisexual persons, and their most important personal relationships, are second-class."
The lawsuit argues that domestic partnership "lacks the same reputation, standing in the community, and traditions and prestige as marriage." This deprives the couples and their children of equal dignity and security, it said.
The couples said they have been discriminated against by hospital officials and police officers who question their relationship status because they are not legally recognized as spouses.
The lawsuit also names as defendants Clark County Clerk Diana Alba, Washoe County Clerk Amy Harvey and Carson City Clerk Alan Grover, who oversee marriage licenses for those jurisdictions.
"Sexual orientation is a core, defining trait and is so fundamental to one's identity and conscience that a person cannot be required to abandon it as a condition of equal treatment," the lawsuit states.
