Battery maker considering HTC One extended batteries

HTC One X battery life

So you've got your shiny new HTC One X or One S, but maybe you're a little underwhelmed by its battery life. Given the phones' lack of removable batteries, you might think you're out of luck.

But aftermarket battery manufacturer Mugen Power thinks it has the answer -- user-serviceable battery replacement kits, which include instructions and tools for HTC One series owners to crack open their phones and perform a battery transplant.

A poll posting on the company's official Facebook page states --

We are looking into making extended batteries for HTC One Series phones that come with internal batteries. An intrusion manual will be provided to the user on how to open the phone and replace the internal battery with our battery with extended capacity.

As you may have seen, taking apart the One X in isn't for the feint of heart -- you'll need a generous supply of spudgers, some elbow grease and plenty of care if you want to take apart the phone and put it back together in working order. And of course doing so, even successfully, will void your warranty with HTC.

To us, this particular avenue sounds like a really bad idea, but all credit to Mugen for thinking outside the box here. Currently the self-service option leads in the company's Facebook poll, with the option to take the phone to a service center proving to be less popular.

HTC One owners, would you take your phone's life into your own hands and risk installing an aftermarket battery yourself? Let us know in the comments.

UFC 145 picks from Kevin Iole, Cagewriter and you

With UFC 145 finally (almost) here, we asked Cagereaders to give us your main card picks to run next to Kevin Iole's and mine. Read on for all of our picks. If you want to join in next time, follow Cagewriter on Facebook.

Mark Bocek vs. John Alessio

Kevin Iole, columnist:? I have wondered when the UFC would bring back Alessio, who has improved greatly since his previous stint with the promotion. But Joe Silva gave him no bargain in Bocek, Bocek is one tick off the top tier and usually wins unless he's fighting a legitimate title contender. I say Bocek neutralizes Alessio's standup and wins a decision. Pick -- Mark Bocek W3 John Alessio

Maggie Hendricks, Cagewriter: Alessio has taken his last three, but they were out of the UFC and he's taking on the very tough Bocek on two weeks' notice. Bocek should be able to grind out a decision win. Pick -- Mark Bocek W3 John Alessio

Jackson Torres, fan: This one is tough to call, Alessio is a veteran and has a lot of wins, but a lot of losses as well. What stands out as his weakness to me is 7 of his 14 losses are by submission. I feel if Bocek can get this to the ground quickly, he can finish it there. Pick -- Bocek Sub R2.

Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin

Kevin Iole:? Hominick is one of the division's best fighters, which he proved in his loss to champion Jose Aldo. His knockout loss to the Korean Zombie his last time out can be discounted. He got caught on the button just as the bout began. I think he's a cut above Yagin skill-wise and will break him down before stopping him. Pick -- Mark Hominick TKO2 Eddie Yagin

Maggie Hendricks: After two losses in a row, Hominick needs a big win. He has been training with Jeff Curran and his team to shake things up for this bout, which shouldn't last too long. Pick -- Mark Hominick KO2 Eddie Yagin

Jackson Torres, fan: Hominick needs a win badly as he has suffered back to back losses and a 7 second knock out at the hands of the Korean Zombie. Yagin has 15 wins with an equal amount of Subs, KO's and Decisions. How ever I feel Hominick will come out strong and this one and get back in the mix with a win. Pick -- Hominick R3 D

Miguel Torres vs. Michael McDonald

Kevin Iole: This is potentially a great fight and one I'm looking forward to with great interest. I could make a case for both guys, but I'll go with experience and take Torres. Torres also has to be hungry and motivated after he was briefly cut by the UFC and I think his experience advantage and his motivation will help him pull out a win in a fight that truly could go either way. Pick -- Miguel Torres W3 Michael McDonald

Maggie Hendricks: The classic match-up of young buck vs. veteran will turn on how Torres handles his first fight back since being cut from the UFC for an offensive tweet. If he plays it smart and doesn't charge in recklessly, he can hold off McDonald for three round. Pick -- Torres W3 Michael McDonald

Jackson Torres, fan: Miguel hasn't fought for a while and McDonald is on a roll right now coming off of that brutal KO of Soto. I feel Miguel will show some ring rust while McDonald utilizes his striking early and finishing it. Pick -- McDonald R2 TKO

Brendan Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell

Kevin Iole: When Schaub is clicking, he's a handful for any heavyweight. He makes mistakes that cause him troubles, but I think he'll land something flashy and stop Big Ben. Pick -- Brendan Schaub KO2 Ben Rothwell

Maggie Hendricks: Schaub's loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in Brazil was tough to take, and he'll want to erase that memory as soon as possible. His speed will be too much for Rothwell. Pick -- Brendan Schaub KO1 Ben Rothwell.

William Corral, fan: I'm going out on a limb here and picking Big Ben Rothwell. Not that I think he's a better fighter, but Schaub will break his hand from repeated punches to Big Ben's Noggin, and then Rothwell will collapse from exhaustion on top of Schaub in the 2nd round. You could classify that as a submission.

Rory MacDonald vs. Che Mills

Kevin Iole: I believe MacDonald is a future champion and this bout is a huge showcase for him. Though MacDonald may look to use his jiu-jitsu, he's also go excellent hands and I see him wearing Mills down and stopping him late. Pick -- Rory MacDonald TKO3 Che Mills

Maggie Hendricks: Though Mills impressed with a 40-second TKO of Chris Cope, MacDonald is quite the jump up in competition. MacDonald's well-rounded game will be much too much. Pick -- MacDonald TKO2 Che Mills

Jackson Torres, fan: This is a very interesting match as Mills destroyed Cope in his UFC debut, how ever Cope isn't that highly ranked in the division and we still don't know what Mills can really do. I feel Rory has the experience when it comes to opponents and that he will get away with the win. I expect this to be fight of the night. Pick -- MacDonald R3 D

Champion Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans

Kevin Iole: I think the long odds favoring Jones are ludicrous. I've been writing for a long time that Evans is a terrific fighter who, for some reason, doesn't get enough credit. I think his quickness and his power will cause Jones a lot of issues. But it's hard to see Evans winning given Jones' takedown defense, his length and his ability to land hard shots from any position. Evans gives him some anxious moments, but Jones is worthy of the hype and should pull it out to retain his belt. Pick -- Jon Jones W5 Rashad Evans

Maggie Hendricks: Thank heavens this fight is finally happening. More than a year of build-up is plenty. If Evans can hold off Jones' attacks to last five rounds, he should win. Unfortunately for Evans, I don't think he will. Jon Jones Sub3 Rashad Evans

Timothy Milloff,? fan: Rashad Evans has always been underrated. He came up the ranks the hard way, thanks to Dana. He is a great fighter and a great guy, always the fighter the fans boo. He will upset Jones like Ali did Liston.

Understanding of hearing in baleen whales amplified

ScienceDaily (Apr. 17, 2012) ? For decades, scientists have known that dolphins and other toothed whales have specialized fats associated with their jaws, which efficiently convey sound waves from the ocean to their ears. But until now, the hearing systems of their toothless grazing cousins, baleen whales, remained a mystery.

Unlike toothed whales, baleen whales do not have enlarged canals in their jaws where specialized fats sit. While toothed whales use echolocation to find prey, baleen whales generally graze on zooplankton, and so some scientists have speculated that baleen whales may not need such a sophisticated auditory system. But a new study by scientists at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), published April 10, 2012, in The Anatomical Record, has shown that some baleen whales also have fats leading to their ears.

The scientists propose that toothed whales may not be the only whales that use fats to transmit sound in water, as previously believed, and the fats in both types of whales may share a common evolutionary origin.

Little progress had been made on the auditory anatomy of baleen whales because specimens to study are hard to get. Unlike many toothed whales, they are large, not kept in captivity, rarely strand on beaches, and decompose rapidly when they do.

For the new study, lead author Maya Yamato, a graduate student in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography, received seven heads of minke whales that stranded and died, mostly on beaches on Cape Cod. She collaborated with the International Fund for Animal Welfare's (IFAW) Marine Mammal Rescue and Research unit in Yarmouth Port, Mass.

The whale heads were scanned using computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at the Computerized Scanning and Imaging (CSI) lab at WHOI and MRI facility at Massachusetts Ear and Eye Infirmary in Boston. Using these biomedical techniques, the researchers generated 3-D visualizations of the whales' internal anatomy, with both bones and soft tissue intact and in their undisturbed natural positions, providing "an unprecedented view of the internal anatomy of these animals," the scientists wrote.

Then the whale heads were dissected in the necropsy facility at the Marine Mammal Center at WHOI. Together, the studies showed that all the minke whales had "a large, well-formed fat body" connecting to the ears, providing a potential transmission pathway guiding sound from the environment to their inner ears.

"This is the first successful study of intact baleen whale head anatomy with these advanced imaging techniques," said WHOI Senior Scientist Darlene Ketten, director of the CSI lab at WHOI and co-author on the paper. "It really is an important addition to our understanding of large whale head and auditory systems."

Also collaborating on the study were Julie Arruda and Scott Cramer at the CSI and Kathleen Moore of IFAW.

This research was funded by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, a WHOI Ocean Life Institute Graduate Fellowship, the Joint Industry Program, the Office of Naval Research, and the U.S. Navy.

Exclusive 'Battleship': Taylor Kitsch Gets Flirty With Brooklyn Decker

In addition to alien-vs.-soldier action, the film has a softer side, as our exclusive clip shows.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Amy Wilkinson

"Fire all the weapons!" Liam Neeson yells in the first "Battleship" trailer, a command dutifully followed by a young naval officer in the film but one that failed to trigger the dude-I-gotta-see-this-movie jones of many moviegoers.

But we had a feeling a lot of folks were missing the point of both the popcorn flick's whiz-bang alien-vs.-soldier brawling and the sun-dappled human-on-human seduction giving "Battleship" its warm, gooey center. The film is perfectly constructed to fill the "Transformers"-sized hole in the summer movie calendar. Audiences overseas are already responding, shelling out $58 million to check it out since the April 11 foreign release. Our turn comes on May 18.

Before then, and having seen the CGI-heavy theatrics in "Battleship" trailers, it's time to take a look at the film's softer side. That's where MTV News' Summer Movie Preview comes into play, delivering an exclusive clip featuring Taylor Kitsch and his bodacious birthday wish, Brooklyn Decker.

The scene in the clip comes early in the film, with Kitsch's unemployed slacker, Alex Hopper, sharing a sad-sack birthday party in a dingy bar with his brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgård). Then Brooklyn Decker's Samantha arrives, seeking a chicken burrito but not necessarily the attention of unemployed slackers. When unemployed slackers look like Taylor Kitsch, though, you can be pretty sure romance is going to bloom — until those pesky aliens arrive and put a damper on the relationship of two of the prettiest people on this, or any, planet.

Let's not keep Skarsgård out of the beauty contest. That's partly how he got the job. Director Peter Berg recently told MTV News that while he loved the actor's work as a vampire in "True Blood," it wasn't his résumé that won him the gig.

"All the girls in the office stormed into my office and demanded that we cast him," Berg said. "And then when I met him, my son was there, and [Alex] got out of his Audi R8 — that's my son's dream car. My son just stood there with his jaw open, staring first at him, then at his car, and he said, 'Dad, it's non-negotiable. Alex is in the movie.' "

Skarsgård's "Battleship" itch was a tad more substantive. "I was working on 'Melancholia' right before this, which is a Lars von Trier, European art-house movie. So I was excited about the combination of doing those two back-to-back," he explained to us. "But then it was also the fact that Pete is an actor and he knows actors and he cares about the characters. ... [He] talked more about the characters and the relationships than how amazing the explosions would look."

That perfectly explains the importance of our exclusive clip. "The movie is really the story of a younger brother trying to grow up and be a man like [his older brother]," Berg said. "There just happens to be an alien invasion in the middle of it."

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "The Avengers," Robert Pattinson's "Bel Ami," Kristen Stewart's "Snow White," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and more!

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

Online Education Startup Coursera Lands $16M From Kleiner & NEA, Adds John Doerr To Its Board

Screen shot 2012-04-18 at 1.26.31 AMIt has already been a year since Peter Thiel called our attention to the bubble that has grown around American higher education. Yet, the costs inherent to receiving a college degree have continued to grow, as student debt in the U.S. today has pushed over $1 trillion, with the average debt per student standing at more than $25,000. Mountain View-based Coursera is one of the many young edtech startups looking to help solve the rising costs in higher education by offering Ivy League-caliber courses online -- for free. To help steer it down this path, the startup is today announcing that it has raised $16 million in venture funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) and New Enterprise Associates (NEA). As part of its investment, veteran investor, KPCB partner, and education reform advocate John Doerr and NEA General Partner Scott Sandell, have joined the startup's board of directors.

Titus Defends Vote Against Small Business Jobs Act

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Former Democratic Rep. Dina Titus says she didn't agree often with Republican Dean Heller when they served
together in the U.S. House.

But both Titus and Heller voted against the Small Business Jobs Act in 2010.

Titus says she opposed the legislation because she thought the Small Business Administration, instead of banks, should have administered the stimulus funding.

Heller voted against it because he felt it was a bank bailout.

Titus spoke Monday on the television program Nevada Newsmakers.

Titus was elected to represent Nevada's 3rd Congressional District in 2008, but was defeated after one term by Republican Joe Heck.

She is running this year in the 1st District, a heavily Democratic district being vacated by Shelley Berkley.

Berkley is challenging Heller for the U.S. Senate.

Homes green upgrade plan 'axed'

Plans to make anyone carrying out a loft or garage conversion pay more for environmental upgrades "will not happen", Downing Street sources say.

Proposals to require homeowners spend 10% of the value of any such work on energy efficiency improvements were unveiled in January.

It would extend rules for large developments to domestic improvements.

But senior Conservatives, including the prime minister, are reportedly opposed to the proposal.

Some critics have called the plans a 'conservatory tax', although the government says most conservatories will not be affected.

The Department for Communities and Local Government have been consulting on the changes to building regulations since January, when Lib Dem minister Andrew Stunnell said the coalition was "committed to being the greenest government ever".

Bonkers

According to the government there are around 200,000 domestic extensions and loft and garage conversions every year.

Under the plans homeowners would be compelled to spend 10% of the cost of their extension, or loft or garage conversion on draught proofing or insulation.

According to the Daily Mail, a source close to David Cameron said the plans were "bonkers" and "should never have been in the consultation".

Downing Street sources told the BBC: "This will not happen."

Tim Yeo, Conservative chairman of the Commons energy and climate change committee, told the BBC last week: "Compelling people who've applied for planning consent to make some alteration in their home to go down this route isn't necessarily going to help."

A Department of Communities and Local Government spokesman said the department had been "consulting on technical changes to building regulations, including energy".

Ministers would "consider the consultation responses carefully" before announcing their plans, he said.

The spokesman added that there were no plans to change regulations covering conservatories.

The government also stressed that plans for its flagship "Green Deal" programme were separate from the building regulations proposals and were not compulsory.

Under the Green Deal, private firms offer to make energy improvements to homes, then recoup payments from homeowners through additional charges on energy bills.

The consultation had suggested that it be "aligned" with the change in building regulations so that homeowners who did have to make energy efficiency improvements could take advantage of the deal "at no upfront cost".

Sharp rolls out high-res IGZO LCDs destined for tablets, laptops and monitors
Well, a week (or two) is a long time in the technology industry, and despite that joint venture with Sony heading south, it's not all bad news for Sharp. According to a press release from the panel maker, it has begun production of the world's first screens based on IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology. These screens are said to promise twice the detail as existing panels of similar transparency, which also translates into a hefty 90 percent reduction in power consumption, reports PC World. Sharp did kindly share some sample specifications, such as a 7-inch tablet display touting a 1280 x 800 resolution equaling 217 ppi, and a 32-inch 3840 x 2160 screen at 140 ppi, to give you an idea of what we can expect. There's no indication yet as to any devices where we might see them showing up, but as the firm claims it's ramping up production "to meet market demand" we guess we'll find out soon enough...
