HTC Bluetooth music adapter now shipping from Sprint

We've been waiting to get the HTC Bluetooth Music Adaptor into our cars since we first saw it at Mobile World Congress in February, and now it's finally available for purchase. As you'll recall, it's a simple dongle that plugs into your car stereo AUX port (or any other 3.5mm jack, really), and allows you to wirelessly stream your music over Bluetooth. And in addition to using the standard A2DP profile, it's got the CSR aptX codec, so your music (theoretically) should sound great over the notoriously janky Bluetooth. Sprint's currently got the adaptor listed at $59.99.

Could you just plug in your phone via the 3.5mm jack? Sure. But that's not really The Future, is it? The other caveat is that you'll have to keep the adaptor charged, but Sprint rates it at 5 hours of play time and 120 hours of standby time. 4. How to Unlock Dry Bowser

The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) has long had guidance on how to measure investment properties. Recently, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), to achieve consistency with its counterpart across the pond (at least that was the theory), set out to measure some investment properties at fair value. But what it came up with was quite different from the IASB guidance.?

Indeed, the FASB?s recent proposal devises a new type of entity: Investment Property Entities (IPE). The proposal lays out six criteria that an entity must meet to qualify as an IPE. And it requires only those entities qualifying as IPEs to measure their investment properties (real estate held for investment purposes, as opposed to all other real estate) at fair value. Unlike the IASB guidance, the requirement to measure investment properties at fair value is not based upon the asset itself. Rather it is based on who owns the asset (an entity-based approach) and why they say they own it (an intent-based approach).

Oppose Entity- and Intent-Based Approaches

The FASB has not explained ? perhaps because it defies explanation ? how the economic value of an asset differs depending on what sort of entity it is ?housed? in. Nor does an asset?s ?value? differ because management expresses an intent, which can change over time, to hold it for investment purposes. This is not grounded in economic logic.

Our members have told us they believe fair value is the most relevant measurement basis for investment properties irrespective of the type of entity owning the real estate. We believe it is reasonable to assert that fair value is the most relevant measurement basis for all real estate properties (not just investment properties) held across a broad spectrum of enterprises (not just IPEs).

In our comment letter to the FASB, we analyze several examples that provide empirical evidence of the relevance of real estate fair value information to the investment decision-making process across a range of enterprises:

• Real estate development and/or operating companies (St. Joe Company)
• Entities which invest in real estate to support operating activities (MetLife)
• Businesses that utilize real estate in their operations (Sears)
• Diversified businesses (General Electric)

In this blog post we provide one of the examples, but we would encourage you to consider the other examples contained in our letter as they are amazingly vivid illustrations of the point we are making to the FASB.

Let?s look more closely at the St. Joe Company. A recent Wall Street Journal article, ?St. Joe Pares Back Its Florida Vision,? analyzes an SEC filing where the company discloses a long-awaited impairment charge as a result of adopting a ?new real estate investment strategy.? This strategy resulted in a real estate write-off of $374.8 million ? nearly 80 percent of the value of the related real estate of $466.2 million ? to a value of $91.4 million. The write-off represented nearly 40 percent of the company?s total assets and equity prior to the write-off. Until then, the company had not disclosed the fair value of the real estate.

The article talks about two well-known fund managers, Bruce Berkowitz (long position) and David Einhorn (short position) who took opposite views on the company based upon the underlying ? but undisclosed ? real estate fair values. Why is this example important? Because it illustrates that while Berkowitz and Einhorn may have had very different views regarding the value of the real estate, the fair value of the real estate is highly relevant to the valuation of such companies ? companies which would not be IPEs under the FASB proposal and thus would not disclose fair value in the financial statements. It does not matter which party is right; what matters is that both parties took different positions based upon the lack of available information regarding real estate fair values. The example illustrates that fair value of real estate is relevant even if housed within a real estate operating company like St. Joe.

Further, the example illustrates fair value is relevant irrespective of management?s stated intent. In this circumstance management intent changed over time because market conditions forced the change (the stated intent to develop was unrealistic and the underlying market conditions driving the fair value of the property prevailed). Management?s desired intent was irrelevant.?

The St. Joe Company example also demonstrates that while sophisticated shareholders such as Berkowitz and Einhorn, who have the resources to obtain estimated property values from tax records, may have an informational advantage over other shareholders, even they may not be able to make reliable estimates given the lack of sufficient disclosure. Only management had the complete information upon which to obtain reliable fair value estimates.

Our view is that this example (and the three others in our comment letter) illustrate why it is important that real estate investment properties be measured at fair value ? even in entities that are not IPEs ? and that fair value be disclosed for all other real estate.?Investors are best served when valuable, relevant ?information is provided in a timely manner.?

Approach We Suggest the FASB Take

We support an asset based approach that requires measurement of investment properties at fair value with disclosure of fair value information for all other real estate.

Syrian suicide blast kills nine, wounds 100

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden car outside security headquarters in Syria's biggest eastern city on Saturday, killing nine people and wounding 100, state media said.

The attack, the first of its kind in Deir Ezzor city since an anti-regime uprising broke out in Syria in March last year, came as world powers discussed ways to end the relentless bloodshed.

A "terrorist suicide bomber" used 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of explosives in the attack on the Deir Ezzor neighbourhood of Ghazi Ayyash, said state television.

The powerful explosion left a crater 3.5 metres (8.2 feet) deep and damaged buildings within a radius of 100 metres (yards), the channel said, adding a four-year-old girl was among those critically injured.

It occurred on a road housing a military and air force intelligence headquarters and a military hospital, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Images broadcast on state television showed a large bloodstain on the ground, a damaged building and vehicles charred by the blast, as well as smoke rising from the targeted district.

"Residential buildings and public and private installations near the site of the terrorist attack suffered serious damage," the television said.

There was no claim of responsibility for the bombing but, as typically happens in such cases, the opposition blamed it on the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

"The Syrian National Council places on the Syrian regime the entire responsibility... for the criminal bombings in several Syrian cities, including the one today in Deir Ezzor," it said in a statement.

"These repetitive blasts are part of the regime's plan to sow chaos and trouble, given that it failed to repress the revolution of the Syrian people."

Elsewhere, a rocket slammed into ruling Baath party offices in northern Aleppo province, the Observatory said, a day after unprecedented anti-regime protests in the provincial capital of the same name.

"Unidentified gunmen targeted a Baath party office in Aleppo's Al-Bab town with a rocket-propelled grenade," said the Britain-based watchdog.

Immediately after the attack, clashes broke out between the gunmen and guards, but there were no reports of any casualties.

The government said it had foiled a suicide bomb attack in Aleppo on May 11, a day after twin bombings in Damascus killed 55 people and wounded nearly 400. It has repeatedly blamed bomb attacks on "terrorists".

In Homs, sniper fire killed a civilian and blasts were heard as shells rained down on the flashpoint central city, the Observatory said.

Saturday's bombing in Deir Ezzor came a day after regime forces foiled a would-be car bombing in the same city, which is about 110 kilometres (70 miles) from the Iraqi border.

What started out as a popular uprising has over time developed into an increasingly militarised revolt, after Assad's regime used force to crack down on peaceful protests.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Thursday he believed Al-Qaeda committed the Damascus attack.

"Very alarmingly and surprisingly, a few days ago, there was a huge serious massive terrorist attack. I believe that there must be Al-Qaeda behind it."

Assad, as well as the United States and Russia, has already pointed to an Al-Qaeda presence in Syria since the revolt began.

On Friday, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said there was no hard proof of that, but that the "Damascus attacks were clearly carried out by a group with organisation and intent."

The same day, G8 leaders met for dinner at Camp David, outside Washington, with discussions focused heavily on the bloodshed in Syria and Iran's contested nuclear programme.

According to a senior US official, there was broad agreement on the need for political transition in Syria.

On the ground, the Observatory said at least 14 people died in violence across the country Friday as thousands took to the streets for an unprecedented anti-regime demonstration in Aleppo.

Protests demanding Assad's ouster also took place in Damascus, Deir Ezzor, northeastern Hasaka and Idlib, and Homs in central Syria, said the Observatory.

The Observatory said tens of thousands of people rallied across the country, in the biggest demonstrations since an April 12 ceasefire which has been violated on a daily basis.

With the violence unabated, UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan plans to return to Damascus soon to further efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis, his spokesman said on Friday, without saying when.

The head of the UN observer mission, Major General Robert Mood, told reporters in Damascus his mission "will reach full operational capabilities in record time."

But he acknowledged that "no volume of observers can achieve a progressive drop and a permanent end to the violence if the commitment to give dialogue a chance is not genuine from all internal and external factors".

According to the Observatory, more than 12,000 people have been killed in Syria since the revolt broke out in March last year, most of them civilians.

I remember vividly my fifth grade book report. The assignment: read a novel and create a replica of the scene that was integral to shaping the narrative. My scene depiction, in an old shoe box, was not only pitiful compared to the others' artistic clay creations and paper mache structures, but also highly inappropriate. My mom was not the kind of mother who helped me brainstorm concepts, gather supplies and labor for hours on a project to create a masterpiece. In fact, there were times she didn't even review my work. She had an unspoken theory that I alone, and not her, was accountable for my work.

To some, this might have been a mistake, since my selected book was the John Grisham novel, The Client. I secretly watched the R-rated film adaptation without my mom's knowledge and claimed I had read the 600-page adult novel as a ten-year-old. I glued my toy car to the center of a shoe box with red string coming from the exhaust pipe of the driver's window to recreate a scene in which the protagonist, Mark Sway, witnesses a mob lawyer attempting to commit suicide through carbon monoxide poisoning. You will have to read the book (or watch the movie as I did) to see what happens, but this class project is one that my mom and I laugh about today. No telling what my teacher thought as I presented a suicide depiction to my fifth grade class while other depicted scenes from Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys.

This continued "do-it-yourself" mentality continued into my high school years. While in boarding school, I would beg my mom to allow me to travel home to South Carolina from Virginia for a weekend escape. "Sure, you can come home, if you find a way to get there." Virtually penniless, I would take midnight greyhounds, suspect trains and even happily hitched a ride from a classmate's paraplegic aunt (a resourceful individual who drove with hand-controlled system).

Looking back, I wouldn't want it any other way because the "like it or not" independence that my mother gave me created a resourcefulness that has helped me immeasurably in adulthood. I didn't grow up depending on my mom to swoop in and fix things like so many of my friends did. After graduating, I watched friends struggle because they hadn't developed the work ethic to seize opportunities that allowed them to support themselves. Surprisingly, I still have friends pushing 30-years-old who still depend on their parents for supplemental income. My mother knew and showed me the real life lesson: independence breeds empowerment.

A former DoGooder Spotlight, Micaela Connery, shares this same value and incorporates it daily in her nonprofit, Unified Theater. Twenty-five year-old Connery developed Unified Theater as a freshman at her Connecticut high school. The program celebrates all students, especially those with physical and developmental disabilities, and brings them together as a community. Growing up, Connery played with her disabled cousin, Kelsey, and never liked it when outsiders treated her differently. Spurred from her personal love for drama and Kelsey's love for music, she founded Unified Theater as a club in her school cafeteria.

Connery saw theater production as an activity everyone could participate in to gain independence, no matter a person's circumstances. A Unified Theater production is completely student-run. The nonprofit offers training, curriculum and support to the group, but leaves the entire production up to the students. Students are responsible for everything from script, set design, costumes, casting, lighting to choreography.

Unified Theater's motto is that a disability isn't something that defines an individual -- it's something that is apart of who you are as much as any other characteristic. The nonprofit doesn't focus on the disability, but rather focuses on working hard as a team. The personal impacts are clear: 98 percent of participants agreed/strongly agreed that Uni?ed Theater improved their self-confidence and 67 percent of student leaders said Uni?ed Theater is their most significant leadership experience to date.

Unified Theater's methods prove that independence helps spark empowerment and confidence amongst its participants. Like my mother, Connery understood that when you foster independence in demonstrative acts, with real tangible rewards, it gives students the confidence to see what else they can achieve. While the groups involved with Unified Theater are centered on inclusion, every participant in the program is responsible for being a part of the creative process. This kind of free-form structure fosters collaboration and offers an equalizing effect no matter what each individual's circumstances might be.
